Whisby Nature Reserve

Whisby Nature Reserve is a beautiful landscape just off the A46 in Lincoln. The reserve is full of wildlife, walks and trails. A former quarry, the reserve now features a series of lakes, surrounded by walking trails, woodland and lots of wildlife.

There are six waymarked trails to choose from at Whisby Nature Reserve ranging from 1.2 to 3 miles. Paths are level and in many places have a hard surface of compacted limestone, ideal for pushchair walks.

Thorpe Walk Yellow waymarkers - 1.2miles - 2km

  • Allow 45 minutes
  • Footpath surface: compacted limestone. There is a small sandy beach part way round.

Grebe Walk Orange waymarkers - 1.3miles - 2.1km

  • Allow 45 minutes
  • Footpath surface: compacted limestone. Hides have wheelchair access.

Coot Walk Red waymarkers - 1.3miles - 2.1km

  • Allow 1 hour and 15 minutes
  • Footpath surface: compacted limestone and grass along the West Lake extension.

Magpie Walk Green waymarkers 2miles - 3.2km

  • Allow 1 hour and 15 minutes
  • Footpath surface: compacted limestone. The most scenic landscapes are on this walk including the small Dragonfly Lakes, the open Grazing Marsh and dune like Sandhills.

Willow Walk Black waymarkers - 2.2miles - 3.6km

  • Allow 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Footpath surfaces: compacted limestone An extension to Magpie Walk through woodland with views across Willow Lake.

Teal Walk Blue waymarkers -1.5miles - 2.4km

  • Allow 1 hour and 45 mins
  • Footpath surfaces: compacted limestone. A scenic walk around Whisby's largest lake. The western lagoon is often full of birds in autumn and early winter.

Dogs: Please keep dogs on a lead as this is a nature reserve. Dogs can be walked off a lead at Thorpe Lake provided they are under close control. Please clean up after your dog.

Car Parking: There is a large car park available. The entrance leads to the Whisby Natural World complex of buildings and car-parks. Gates open at 7am and close either at 6pm or 9pm seasonally, parking is charged at a rate of £2 per day (pay and display) between the hours of 10am and 4pm. (£1 November to February). Disabled parking bays can be located at the top end of the car park outside the Natural World Centre.
